A question I often ask my mates is how many Wolves players can you name? It is harder than you think. They are never on the tele and to be honest they’re the club in the Premier League that I care about the least. It often seems that those involved from top to bottom of the club think the same.

The Vitor Pereira era kicked off post an array of poor managerial hires; Bruno Lage, Julien Lopetgui and Gary O’Neil. They started strong and an eccentric style steered the club away from relegation utilising the often welcome, often unsustainable, new manager bounce. A decent squad with two excellent players alongside those that could perform above their station, led to a decent run of form towards the end of last season. However as expected the departures of both Cunha and Ait Nouri massively impacted the squad, never mind the additional issues and injuries surrounding their star striker Stand Larsen. Coupled with a manager who seems to lack the quality to lead at the highest level, an underperforming and ageing goalkeeper in Jose Sa and ultimately a lack of ambitious signings, this season was always going to be a long one.

So, what’s next? Currently sitting winless in bottom place and a nicely timed David Ornstein tweet announcing the interest in the return of Gary O’Neil alongside Michael Carrick and Rob Edwards is unfortunately a very Championship looking situation. The managerial market is dire, especially those out of work. The pool is dominated by mediocrity; Erik Ten Hag, Ange Postecoglou and Gareth Southgate encapsulate it. The three previously mentioned are all of a similar ilk, they’ve all showed promise at times, yet eventually never really got it consistently working. A style of play that often seems poised to verge on the ambitious and modern, yet fails to deliver results.
