If you were to follow the belief of many among the football populous, games like yesterday’s explosive battle at Stamford Bridge simply don’t happen anymore.

While Arsenal’s trip to Chelsea perhaps wasn’t fought with quite the same hatred of the days of Mourinho vs Wenger, both Mikel Arteta and – more poignantly – Enzo Maresca managed to light a fuse among their players to spark an afternoon of aggression and intensity in West London.

But Maresca’s move to fire his players up wasn’t purely an emotional “get stuck in lads.” The Italian recognised a rare chink in the Gunners’ armour and used it – even after going down to ten men – to share the points with the Premier League leaders.
